Changing my Decor

From the Farm to Farmhouse Style

When we moved into our garden home from the farm back in 2013, I wanted to change up my decorating style. Chip and Jo Jo had not been introduced to me yet, but I knew the dark furniture and heavy fabrics just weren’t my thing anymore. I didn’t call it a “farmhouse” look because all that I knew about a farmhouse was muddy roads that I had to fight when it rained, acres of yard to care for and dirt blowing in my doors and windows. (Not to mention the bright stars that you see at night, the peaceful sound of silence and the wonderful smell of dirt when my hubby was in a tractor plowing behind the house – I truly miss those things!)

Changing it up

Anyway….I digress. When we moved to town, I had a lady come over to help me decorate. She taught me that if you have lighter colored decorations, it makes the house feel bigger, brighter and more inviting. As I looked around my house, all I saw was dark and dreary: stained wood furniture, brown leather sofa/chairs, jewel toned decorations….you get the picture.

How could I get the look that I wanted without breaking the bank? I couldn’t afford to go out and buy all new furniture and accessories. My friend told me some simple things to start with – add in some clear glass, some reflective pieces and some lighter lamps.  I thought to myself, “ok, I can do that!” Plus it gave me a chance to do one of my favorite activities….SHOP! I measured a few things, made a list and hit the stores. Of course, I went to all of my favorites like Hobby Lobby, Kirklands, Target, and World Market.

These are some of the things I bought that day.

Already seeing the difference

The few pieces that I purchased made a big difference!  Over the next few months, I bought more things and slowly began to lighten up my decor. I even bought some new bedding to use in our master bedroom. Out with the red, french country look and in with the white, blues, lighter colored items.

Just the beginning

After seeing what a difference a few changes made, I knew it was time to move forward. This neutral, farmhouse look was really beginning to catch on. I knew I couldn’t afford to change out all of my decor. What was I going to do? Click here to see how I made some other changes to my home.

Be blessed,

  1. Your friends will be WOWed by what you can and have done! I’ve always thought you have had great decorating talents, always! You are gutsy and that’s what it takes to do some of these do it yourself projects. Maybe you have really missed your calling! NOT, cause you are an awesome principal. But one day when your “older” like your aunt you can retire and start a new hobby/job! I’m waiting to see your YouTube video, let me know when it’s out there and I’ll take a look!!! (Auntie)

    1. I may have to do one eventually. It would be hilarious! Hmmm….what could I name it….She’s an expert in nothing….or…what do I have to lose….keep thinking. Maybe we can come up with something.

  2. 4 views… I would watch too! Wonderful words on taking your time with decor!!!
